Self care is going main stream and I’m here for all of it!
My only complaint is that the things we’re seeing with #selfcare attached is either all about salon days and shopping sprees. DO NOT MISTAKE ME – I live for salon days. I’m a girl’s girl through and through, but I also know that self care is way more than LOOKING good. First and foremost, self care is about FEELING good. Taking care of your mind and body.
We live in a world that demands so much of our time and energy to just live. Self care has to start with making sure we aren’t working ourselves into a panic attack (been there and it is not fun for anyone.)
For me, what that looks like is a good old fashioned veg day. I learned this from my uncle growing up. I must have gotten his “I can’t sit still” gene because all I ever need is a veg day to get back up and keep goin’. A veg day is what we now call a Staycation, which sounds much more fun and cute so we’re rolling with that. So without further delay, let’s prepare you for your first Staycation.
- Prep. The anatomy of any good Staycation for me starts the week before – I do a good, deep clean in my little apartment. Let me tell you I DO NOT DO ANYTHING I DON’T WANT TO DO on my veg days. The last thing I want to do is clean my apartment before I can enjoy it. So here is a short list of what I clean so that I can enjoy my day! (working on a detailed list to share soon!)
2. Communicate that you’re taking a day to yourself. I am pretty active in my community and I tend to fill my calendar with events and meet ups to keep up with my friends and family, so I also try to prepare by letting people know that I’m taking a day to myself. Just a short and sweet message saying,
“I’ll be unavailable this Saturday, so I’ll be turning off my phone. If there’s an emergency, please text Jeremy to reach me!”
3. I go buy everything I’ll need for the day.
Food. I buy food.
Most days, I treat myself to delicious take out that I try not to have during the week.
The rest is really up in the air. Sometimes I need to sleep all day and not feel guilty about it, sometimes I venture out to a family BBQ that I WANT to go to, (Let’s be honest, some family events are obligatory and you don’t go to those during your Staycation) and sometimes I park it on the couch and watch movies while I craft!
However self care looks to you, make sure that you prioritize it. You are the most important person in your life; never forget that.
Here is a list of ideas for a self care Staycation!
